Teaching & Workshops

Betsy thoroughly enjoys teaching in groups, workshops, retreats, and at schools, and has taught across Canada and in the UK for twenty-five years. She leads presentations and teaching engagements that last as little as one hour or as long as several weeks or months in duration. Payment is negotiated on the basis of each invitation.

Contact Betsy for more information or to extend an invitation to her.

Where does Betsy teach?

Betsy has taught in settings such as:

  • book clubs
  • workplaces
  • ongoing writing workshops
  • writing intensives and schools
  • conferences
  • residential writing retreats
  • writer-in-residencies
  • Betsy also offers one yearly residential retreat. Email her if you wish to be included in her contact list about this retreat or to inquire about any of the other options mentioned above.

What does Betsy focus on in her teaching?

The focus of these engagements may be:

  • general (example: how to prepare a poetry manuscript)
  • generative (example: identifying a new, vital topic or perspective and producing new writing)
  • guidance (example: how to navigate a visionary quest propelling the narrative)
  • concerns of craft (example: how to determine the appropriate form to use in a narrative)
  • What if I want to create something new?

Betsy teaches a wide range of topics and is always curious to focus on new challenges, so do pitch her your idea.

To gain a good sense of her approach and topics that she has been investigating, read her twenty-four essays in Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing (Cormorant Books, 2010).
