There’s a Trick I am Learning to Do with My Manuscript
Residential July Retreat

I lead a four-day residential writing retreat at Baldwin House on Deer Lake in Burnaby, B.C. in July. All six prose writers were working on book-length manuscripts. The focus was on identifying and effectively presenting (within the first pages) the predicament necessitating the entire manuscript’s narrative. Much was accomplished and enjoyed and I look forward to offering another retreat late spring or early summer of 2010.

Please email me at ac.ufs@dnalrawb if you would like to be contacted for my next retreat. The focus of the 2010 retreat, and the genre, is yet to be determined.

grain magazine's Summer 2009 issue, Vol. 36, No. 4, includes two essays "Table" and The Line" from Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing to be published by Cormorant Books, Spring 2010.

AN AWARD!

My suite of poems, "Dark Thoughts" (from What Holds Us Here, BuschekBooks) was used as the lyrics to inspire composer Betsy Raum to write an exquisite piece for mezzo-soprano and piano, which in turn, was recorded. This cd then went on to win the 2008 Western Canada Music Award's Outstanding Classical Composition: Elizabeth Raum, Dark Thoughts (from How Bodies Make Ecstatic Marks on Centrediscs). This is the first award for the Prairie Sounds imprint of the CMC Prairie Region in only its second compact disc release! The title of the cd is from a quote from the final poem in my "Dark Thoughts" suite.
